I think I see the conflict but it's a shame when you can't put things behind yourself with someone, and then that someone dies. It makes for a lack of closure in unpleasant circumstances like that one. So, I think I get where Nick Meyer is coming from, somethings never can be changed but it doesn't stop us from wishing that could.

All praise to Gene for creating STAR TREK. However, his edict of a perfect humanity in few hundred years seems unlikely. Not to mention, some of my favorite moments from TOS came from conflict between Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Utopia is boring and makes for bad TV.

I've always thought that how the crew overcame their prejudice was one of the greatest story elements in the film. It was a perfect allegory for the changing relations between America and Russia at that time.
