Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry passed away a few weeks before the release of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Following Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Roddenberry continued to consult on the Star Trek films, but was not directly involved as a producer. At the Star Trek night for the LA Times Hero Complex Film Festival on Friday June 10th, Star Trek VI director and co-writer spoke about tensions between himself and Roddenberry regarding elements of the film, especially the anti-Klingon racism displayed by Star Trek's heroic crew who Roddenberry felt should be more evolved.

  • All praise to Gene for creating STAR TREK. However, his edict of a perfect humanity in few hundred years seems unlikely. Not to mention, some of my favorite moments from TOS came from conflict between Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Utopia is boring and makes for bad TV.

  • I've always thought that how the crew overcame their prejudice was one of the greatest story elements in the film. It was a perfect allegory for the changing relations between America and Russia at that time.

  • I think I see the conflict but it's a shame when you can't put things behind yourself with someone, and then that someone dies. It makes for a lack of closure in unpleasant circumstances like that one. So, I think I get where Nick Meyer is coming from, somethings never can be changed but it doesn't stop us from wishing that could.
