For those out there who find that Utility Patents are just a little out of their price range they can file what is called a Provisional Patent. A Provisional Patent lasts for a period of 1 year. During that time you are considered to be "Patent Pending". During this year you can go out and attempt to sell your patent, attract investors, license out your patent pending invention, etc... You don't technically have a Patent but you have a 1 year grace period.
