At the start of the season Nicklaus declared that he was not going to play in the 1998 U.S. Open, even though he had a sponsors exemtion. He said the only was he was going to play in the 1998 U.S. Open is if he qualified from the Masters. And boy did he ever.
Nice! I have been searching for images of that tournament, especially with Nicklaus. Many people seem to have forgotten that Nicklaus came in 6th place that year, 5 under par. Best ever player over 50.

Nicklaus was marvelous in '98, but his overall record after age 50 is well behind that of Watson, Snead and perhaps others.
