Arial footage of the Veerse Gat Dam at the estuary of the Veerse Gat. It is part of the Three Islands Plan, which owes its name to the three islands (Walcheren, North Beveland and South Beveland) which are connected via two dams. Built in 1961, it was built to protect the three aforementioned islands from potential disaster. Construction was a challenge due to the large size of the estuary, 320 metres wide. The currents would have been too strong to use the same type of caissons as used in the Zandkreek Dam. Drain caissons had to be used. They were left open while being installed thus allowing water to flow through unhindered. When the currents were at a minimum, the slides of the caissons were lowered.
