Fabulous song that I heard 'Mississippi' John Hurt sang many years ago. There are lots of versions of this around and variations on the words.. "I pull my dress up to my knees, I give my total all to whom I please" MJH got away with it so why can't I...

  • Thank you. I have Stefan Grossman to thank for my introduction to MJH......How to play blues guitar for Xmas many years ago. It started a lifetime of trying to play guitar.

  • thats great, I remember listening to SG in my formative years.. he's great.. thanks fo rlistening.. cheers M

  • Your syncopation is just fine ("getarslim"). Stephan Grossman's claim to fame is ragtime. Why do so many people feel the need to compare. If everyone sounded the same, what a drab musical world this would be. I continue to enjoy your posts....

  • that is all very true, thank you for your kind words.. Mike

  • This is magic. You get terrific rhythm into what is essentially a very simple song.

I think Mississipi John would be happy to hear this.

  • thank you.. MJH had such authentic honesty in his playing.. If I could just drink in some of that.. I would have loved to have met him.. M:)

  • Hi, yes MJH was great, I remember as a child in Scotland hearing MJH, Robert Johnson and Son House on the radio occasionally and I was hooked. When we got a TV in 1957 I saw Lonnie Donegan play guitar and sing and I thought, 'this is great' one guy with a guitar, got to learn to play guitar, so nagged my parents for about 2 years and got my first guitar in '59 the first tune I learned was 'the house of the rising sun' so there we go, my life in a moment, cheers Les

  • thanks for your observations.. your quite right.. MJH was/is wonderfully unique.. that sound was of its time and can't be equalled.. an incredible human quality came from his songs.. I've seen Stefan a couple of years ago.. his version is brilliant if a little technical.. many thanks for sharing your views.. kind regards Mike :)

  • Hi, I play this tune too, your style is really good although not as syncopated as MJH. I do it more like Stefan Grossman, check out his youtube postings, good luck, your a good player and I should know, been playing for 50 years now.

  • Thanks Gladys.. I've been slow at catching up with my post!! lol.. kind regards as always
