On September 11, 1980 John Lennon had begun work on a double-EP that he tentatively called The Right Album. While Milk and Honey was recorded and mastered at Hit Factory, A & R Studios, and Sterling Sound---all proper studios based in New York City--it was in his own home studio, arranged out of somewhat outdated equipment, that he would dedicate the evening hours to work on this "pet project" of his. Side One would have been made up of avant garde sound collages while Side Two would have contained the more "normal", "acceptable" John Lennon fare. Recording began on September 11 and continued until his death on December 8.

Most of the tapes have been lost.
There is (and has been, for quite some time) hearsay that Yoko Ono herself burned these tapes, deeming them unnaceptable for a commercial release. While I don't know about that, I do know that it would have been one of his most daring, experimental albums.

I would often ponder what the ramifications would be were I to release this song. Indeed, it must have been important to John as it was the one song he showed me of this rather arcane project he had undertaken. He and Yoko had begun to spend less and less time together, so it is doubtful that she heard any of it, either.

I have held on to this tape for many years. Yoko has made many attempts to retrieve it from my grasp, but I have held my ground to the bitter end. Ultimately, I never would have had the courage to release this had I not a very special man that you all know as Iamaphoney. He is truly dedicated to his cause, which has become my cause too (though I have since stopped seing him due certain....complications that arose). Iamaphoney has his briefcase; I have this tape. Both are means to the same end.

For those of you who have it this far, congratulations, the truth is here. With Iamaphoney's help I discovered that both forwards AND backwards, this song is loaded with hidden messages. While similar in style (and name, obviously) to Revolution 9, it contained many firsts for a John Lennon composition, such as the use of a vocoder near the end of the song. As someone who always deeply admired John for his experimental nature, this is a truly magnificcent piece and it offers a glimpse it what could have been had he not been shot that fateful December night in 1980.

I have done all that I can do to make the audio prestentable. But the tape is over two decades old, and I'm an artist, not an audio technician. I have a cleaner-sounding but much shorter edit of this on another tape, but unless people are really interested I won't even bother. It's not that I don't care; I am simply a busy woman. None of this is likely to matter soon, because they are getting ready for the big reveal (and it is rapidly approaching), and once the truth is heard once and for all recordings like this will likely seem trivial.

But anyway...

John, this is for you.

You know I always loved you..

  • You know, as far as Lennon compositions go, there really is a lot to be said for "Please Please Me" and "And Your Bird Can Sing"

  • Indeed. Though his avant garde pieces were certainly nice, too.

  • Wow! This was posted three years ago?! What happened to the big reveal coming very soon? Time for the truth to come out!

  • @ilovefreedom80 it started in 1965 when a lady in the press called john the fat beatle

  • This was part of an ill-fated April Fools prank I played on the PID community back in April of 2008. The idea was that it was supposed to be a Revolution 9-style sound collage for an avant-garde side project John had been working on in secret at the Dakota building in late 1980, shortly before his death. basically threw together a lot of dissonant sound effects, classical music, and various outtakes, ....................Was found on another youtuber's page RockXLight-see for more-Bad Joke...

  • a couple of these photos are after his death, now how is that possible? Hmm

  • @PIKlynch hypnotic being the KEY word...

  • Thank God for the work of you guys. P.S. You SHOULD put up a clean version too: because if there's backward masking or simply interspersed forward whispers, it will be more audible. Yay John: lied to, partly overwhelmed and confused into many things, but a real balanced person -- at root -- through it all. ----- I notice he really aged quickly from 1967 on. Still looking fairly young at 32, but there's a thinning of his face from 1967. Lovely still though in his way.

  • 6,666th view! YEEAH!

  • My god John looks terrible.

  • This is cool! Kinda spooky.... But its great! Thanks!

  • John was not happy in 1979 and 80. In his own words and his paranoia of getting fat, he looked anorexic the year he died.
