Hi all,

Here is a my 1941 R.A Lister "D" type petrol stationary engine driving my 1937 Metropolitan Vickers 12V Dynamo. The engine is running much sweeter now for a new spark plug.

It is powering five 6V bulbs with ease. Listen closely when I drop the switch and you will hear it load up the generator.

Engine Specification: Made in 1941 by R.A Lister & Co. Ltd of Dursley England and used to power an Alfa Laval milking set until 1970. It has a 3" bore and stroke and a single piston with overhead valves. It produces 1.5HP at 700RPM.

Dynamo Specification: Made by Metropolitan Vickers of Birmingham in 1937 and produces 12V at 1160RPM (I can get more at higher speeds) and produces 30AMPS. I have got it powering five 6V bulbs wired in series to an old ceramic "Clunk" switch.

I am going to build a control board and light board as soon as I have the wood.

Hope you enjoyed the video!

  • without pulley its a dangerous contraption, belt drives should always be connected via appropriate pulleys

  • There is nothing dangerous about driving a dynamo from the flywheel rim, thats how it was done on the small Lister bruston D type sets, the ones that were not driect coupled, how it was done on the CS startomatics sets. Allmost any belt drive generating set i can think of had the belt drive running from the flywheel.

Spend time alighning it all correctley and there is no problem. This set has now been completed and has run many hours, the belt has never come off.....

  • Mlimey mate! You _need_ to tighten that belt.

  • Ha Ha! I have a new belt now thats about three times bigger! See the lattest video of this, it's running a lot better now as well and on more load too.
