Border Collie Rescue - Sheepdog Training - Gael

At Border Collie Rescue we assess every dog around sheep so we can understand the degree of herding interest and ability of each Border Collie we take in. Those that want to work go to working homes, those that don't can go as companions.
To keep the sheep in order during assessments or sheepdog training, we use a trained sheepdog we call a 'control dog'. This is a video of 'Gael' being trained to become a future 'control dog' for our organisation.
She is being assisted by one of our current control dogs, Dot, who you will see in the background from time to time - never in the way - but always ready!

The Border Collie is designed to be a sheepdog and was originally used for herding livestock in the English and Scottish Borders. Border Collie Rescue assesses all dogs coming into our care for herding ability and will rehome them as stockdogs if that is what they need to do but we also assess and rehome for scent discrimination skills to the Police, Prison Service and Excise to detect drugs, explosives and firearms -- to SARDA and other rescue organisations for mountain rescue and search and rescue work -- to help deaf, blind or otherwise disabled people as well as for working trials, flyball, agility, obedience and other interactive sporting disciplines and many of our dogs have qualified for Crufts in these disciplines. Those that show us they do not need or want to work are rehomed as PAT dogs, pets and companions.

Gael is fine - yes we still have her. Wont part with her now, she is far to valuable to our work. Dot is taking a back seat as she gets on in years so Gael is slowly gaining more experience as a lead dog in control of the sheep. Maybe we should do aother video on her progress?

The best thing I can think of watching is that of a beautiful Border Collie doing what (S) He was meant to do.... Herd!!!

Besides my husband, my border Collie, Oban, is my best friend. He will be turning 4 Oct. 20th and I can honestly say that he saved my life and continues to every single day. Keep these wonderful videos coming!

I am luck enough to also have a Border Collie.

She looks very much like Gael. Casey has a strong herding drive. Watching Gael I get chills. I love the breed but some of them tend to get under my skin. We are coming to your neck of the world next June, I would love to come and see your BCs. My husband says we are going half way around the world and I want to see border collies.....I guess I am just a Border Collie snob. Please keep more vids on Gael and the others. Thank you
