Catechisms are wonderful tools to bring us to deeper understanding of what the Bible teaches us. Many children, and even adults say they would like to know more about God's word, but many times may not even know what questions to ask. The Shorter Westminster and the Heidelberg Catechisms are wonderful tools to use to extract truths found in scripture and give families or Bible study groups an opportunity to discuss them, while using scripture. These catechisms, and some of the Baptist Catechisms of the past, are time tested, scripture referenced, and full of Biblical doctrine. It is, after all, commanded of us in the scriptures to abide in sound doctrine that is according to scripture.

Unfortunately, most devotionals and Bible studies sold today are not based on intense prayer and study of the scriptures, but are usually very man-centered and take scripture out of context. It is not enough, especially in this day and age, to just know the major Bible stories.

Confessions, creeds, catechisms, and commentaries are wonderful tools to open the scriptures so that we may study to show ourselves approved.

  • If we truly love our Lord Jesus, and love our children, we should have a deep desire to not only read scripture for the examples it leaves us, but we should strive to find those deep truths God has left us in His Word, studying to show ourselves approved...

If our attitude towards His Word is that we know all we need to, and no longer need to study it, this is a testament to a spirit of rebellion, or an unconverted soul.
