Paul Farmer is not your ordinary doctor. In going to the poorest places on earth, he is not only treating patients, but challenging whole healthcare systems. More than twenty year ago, Dr. Farmer co-founded the charity Partners in Health to provide free medical care in central Haiti. Today, Partners In Health provides healthcare for people with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other conditions in Haiti and eight other countries around the world. We spend the hour with Dr. Farmer on his work, his remarkable background and the challenges of pursuing healthcare with a social justice perspective.

  • Paul Farmer is a genius. Seriously. Don't say he needs to grow a brain.

  • he specifically said in some places.

His clinics are great. The patients pay nothing and the staff go out of their way to assist you.

  • @mnm1972 It's not with government or taxpayer money, its from donations. People don't believe that the poor are in the US too, so those charities are ignored. At least, thats what was portrayed in Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder.

  • Oh nurses are weeners and will never change the healthcares system. THey are too damned busy cutting each others legs out from one another. I know. I have been an RN 22 years!! With it mainly women forget it!!

  • As an RN I can say that training and paying community health care workers can make entire communities more healthy. The worker is trained, so takes better care of her own family.

She has money in her pocket which boosts the local economy.

  • Yes, I read that today. The US government is flying hundreds of haitians to the US and paying for their healthcare yet they can't do that for their own citizens.

  • Some U.S. citizens are being denied health care but then they are giving health care to non citizens for free.
