I Researched This Great Sea-Going Cruise Vessel And Became Enraptured With This Grand Lady's Story Both Past And Present...A Story Repleat With Historical Truths Relevent For Eternity...I Hope That This Ship Is Given Some Glory In Return For Its Many Years Of Service...There Is A Lot Of Video Available But Only So Much Photography, So I Needed To Use What I Borrowed And My Sincerest Thanks To Those Who Had The Foresight To Document The Journeys Of The S.S. United States...As A Side Note We Believe Family Traveled On The Ship And Thus It Endears Us To It...Blessings To Those Who Sacrifice On Behalf Of The S.S. United States...Hopefully It May Yet Find Safe Harbor...

Terrific presentation! Here's some good news: there's a celebration tonight at Pier 82, Columbus Blvd. Philadelphia to celebrate the 58th anniversary of the ship's maiden voyage and to announce the donation of $5.8 million from Gerry Lenfest to enable the SS United States Conservancy to purchase this great ship.

I sailed on her in 1961 from New York to Germany. What a Ship she was, what a´n unforgettable experience to sail the fastest Cruise Ship in the World. Sad to see her dying a slow death.

would take to fire up those huge turbines enough to even

back that colossus out of the harbor? It LOST MONEY from

its very first trip back when diesel oil was 6 cents per gallon.

Somewhere you can find the specs on the United States'

engines and fuel consumption. It was designed to have

200,000 horsepower but on sea trials came closer to

300,000. It was standby for the Navy as a possible troop

ship. Interior was TACKY but fireproof.

Seaworthy she isn't, but I stand by that if you could get the props back on you could sail her. The real question is, how far before you sunk.

I know of the ongoing effort to save her, and I hope they do.

@pieman97405 The ship is no longer seaworthy, so thats a bad idea. Check out the effort to save the ship. Look for the SS United States Foundation or SS United States Conservancy. =)
