  • Anyway, I drove straight thru a roundy when I was in Ireland one summer. Good times.

  • We're getting rid of them in NJ. We call them traffic circles. But here, they are huge, usually featuring a small forest in the center of them.

They were ok for 50 years ago, but they can't handle the volume of traffic any longer.

Happily, the solution was to get rid of the circles, and not the cars, as white Liberals would prefer.

  • Roundabouts are the ultimate achievement in conservative planning. Takes out all overburdensome, irrelevant government regulation. Traffic flows as it comes. No stoplights or stop signs holding you up when there is no traffic coming from any other direction. Slows you down enough to make sure you're safely proceeding thru the intersection. The only thing coerced is private drivers respecting other private drivers and submitting to the other rules of the road.

  • I think roundabouts (traffic circles) are the civil engineering equivalent of the question mark. Don't know what to do there? Install a roundabout.

  • @merkavah4

    Swindon has a worse example.

  • The only time I think I have ever disagreed with Mark Steyn.

Roundabouts are wonderfully efficient and far better than crossroads with lights. Also for emissions, not that that is a priority for Steyn.

A roundabout without traffic-lights is a far more libertarian scenario.

This still made me laugh though.

  • Mark is right about roundabouts here in the UK:

    ---

The Magic Roundabout (officially known as the Greenstead Roundabout) in Colchester, Essex, England...is a large ring of road composed of five mini roundabouts, with 2 lanes in each direction joining each to its neighbour. It is known for its complexity, and the resulting confusion it causes for some motorists.

    ---

  • @ :41 LOL!!! Reminded me of "European Vacation" w/ Chevy Chase when he was stuck in the roundabout and couldn't get out.

    "Look kids, Big Ben....Parliment" LMAO!!!

  • Preach it, Brother Mark!

  • He was doing so well, but inthe end couldn't help laughing.
