I think we all know that Ross Rowland is one fine engineer!

Fantastic sight! I remember this scene of the Charleston station from back in the late sixties and I greatly appreciate seeing a steamer here. The memories comrolling back!

@1jackdk Ah cause he was the guy working at the station that time and he just retired from working at the Charleston station last summer and ever since then, they've now done internal makeovers of the whole station. It's pretty much now starting to become modernized.

@1jackdk sad to say lima had another super power design that almost was produced. The 2-8-6. It was supposed to have larger drivers. I believe 78" drivers. The horsepower was supposed to be 1/4 more than the berks. It would contain a larger fire box. Many people say it's not true that this engine was ever considered. My great grandfather, who worked at Lima, had some documents regarding the locomotive design. Keep in mind 765 was meant to haul longer, but lighter loads (boxcars). 614-coal hauler

WOW ~ really impressively moving! Even though I am a huge FAN of "trainfart" and watch hardly anything else ~ this is remarkable footage! Thank you a lot!

i had the opprtunity to be in the cab of this great steam engine in 1981 and see it in action and it is a super piece of history.

you got it. that is the Charleston station on the South Side Expressway where you get on Amtrak
Do you have anymore old footage from around the Charleston area? Also, do you remember talking to a certain Bruce at the station?

@juliussespiritu Not to much in the Charleston area. Did catch an empty hopper train, with a single GE if I recall. But didn't take any movies of it, as I was saving that film for 614. I don't remember a Bruce, but I did talked to a good many people while we where there, and also down at Pratt. Thanks for watching...

NKP 765 would've been far better suited for this job.

@scobrown1 I kinda REALLY doubt that! Just look at the specs. 614-weight on drivers, 282000 lb, & 68300 tractive effort, & 4000+hp. NKP 765- 264000 lb, (10 tons lighter) 64135 tractive effort (4000 lb less) & 2754 hp ( not even as much as one GP40) Can't picture a single GP40 pulling 50 loaded 100 ton coal hoppers that fast by its self. Don't think the NKP765 could ever do what 614 did, let alone doing this everyday in this month of January when these test where made. Thanks for watching.

@1jackdk Ok, your right about wieght and horsepower. Thing is at what speed was 4000+ available? I'm pretty sure that 614's 74" drivers are great for high speed. 765 69" drivers while not a lot shorter would be more indicative to producing all her horsepower at the speed 614 was running up the gorge. I some how doubt 614 was producing all her horsepower at 25mph running between Montgomery and Hinton with the loads.

@scobrown1I got the HP rating wrong. Ross Roland reports hp was near 5000 on these test runs. Next! When 614 pulls out of Charleston station, It never spun a wheel with all those loaded coal hoppers. Even when Lima built their Super Power locomotives (2-8-4 & 2-10-4) they said it end with the ultimate Super Power 4-8-4, and the 614 was the latest design, and built in June of 1948. So I agree with 765 being Super powered, even though it had a lower rating than PM & C&O 2-8-4. Still don't = 614.
