Just a short video of my ICOM IC-718 on the 80 meter band. This is one of my backup rigs I use, mainly for Field day. My main rig is currently the IC-7600.

  • @beast6228 now i need to go find a wire antenna for the attic, i got quite a bit of room up there, and i'm interested in building a wire antenna that can be used on most if not all of the HF bands, without a tuner. i haven't the patience to deal with tuning antennas. :P

  • @godzilla74114 Yeah that's what I did way back when, I knew I was gonna pass the test so I went and bought all the equipment. You'll like the 718, put a decent microphone on it and you'll have really nice audio on the airwaves. I've had several of these radios over the years and they never let me down yet. Tough little sets.

  • @beast6228 yeah it doesn't look to difficult. just bought an Icom 718 for my first HF rig. i'm getting my rig bought before i get my ticket. :D

  • @godzilla74114 Thanks for the reminder, it's been a while. But the General test is easy, about the same thing as the Technician.

  • @beast6228 the 50 question test is for extra, Tech and general if i remember right are 35 or 36, its been a while since i took my tech exam. hope to take and pass my general in a few weeks.

  • They come standard with AM, CW, LSB, USB, you have to get an FM board to do that. The reason is, because FM isn't used on 160-12 meters much...if at all. 10 meters yes. But in general, hams use FM on the vhf and uhf bands.

  • They are a nice radio, very heavy duty and well built. Made better and will last longer than any cb radio on the market. I would definitely get one over a receiver. Getting your ham radio license is easy, 50 question test (multiple choice) no morse code. Tons of people to talk to, whereas cb radio is pretty much a dead thing. Anyways, you can get these radios used for a little over $400 bucks.

  • No, but I have had several of these radios over the years and it doesn't make much of a difference with or without one. People will say it will, but it's an audio dsp, not an IF dsp so there is big difference between the two.
