I am quite proud to be a rail enthusiast from the country that invented the railways. The USA and Canada are far behind the rest of the world in rail standards. However, the French TGV networks from what I've seen just have two straight tracks that have speed limits of over 180mph. Perhaps, for the USA and Canada, four tracks would be more ideal? Keeping the fast intercity services on the inside lines, and freight and commuter services on the outside would reduce congestion on the new routes.
Me too. I believe that this new vision, no, not a vision, an investment that will create millions of new jobs, lessen pollution, and be the cause of a decrease in economic crisis. I'm all for it Mr. B.O. America needs to catch up to Japan, China, and other countries. Just one thing...what about MEXICO?!?!?!
if there was anything that I could possibly agree with obama, it would be a high speed rail system... (but hopefully not all stuck over in east coast political land). Most people that I know that hate obama support a high speed rail system..
I quite agree. High Speed Rail is the way forward for the entire world. Obviously the East Coast will have much more focus, but other big cities in the West and South will matter too, not to mention the north in Canada. Planes are just too damn dirty to continue the job for much longer.
Passing Prop. 1A didn't mean this project will happen. All it did was give California the go-ahead to SEEK 9.95 Billion dollars in the form of bonds. The over-all project cost is predicted to be (in today's dollars) just under $50 Billion! So, even IF we could sell those bonds (which will now be Junk-bonds by the way), it'll cover less than 20% of it. Even THAT is unlikely because the value of U.S. money is falling fast due to Obama's $10,000,000,000,000 TARP debt. (Yes folks, that's13 zeros.)
Yes, the high-speed rail system has an expensive price tag. But you've failed to mention it's half the cost of alternatives which is building new runways and airport terminals, and expand hundreds of miles of freeways throughout the state.
The cost: OVER $80 billion The cost of HSR: $45 billion
