This is what a HYPP tremor looks like. This is her front forearm muscle. She was able to come out of it with karo syrup and banamine, and is fine now, but she was down and not able to get up for quite a while.

  • No, no, no, a truly negative horse will not have an attack. There are other things that cause similar symptoms. Tying up and muscle cramps can look like a Hypp attack. Hypp attacks have nothing to do with size of muscles. I know of a Appy pleasure horse that had regular mild attacks if he is stressed. Tying up is often related to large muscles, which I have seen more cases of than HYPP attacks. Also, HYPP doesn't always make a horse more muscular.

  • Just a reminder if you are going to comment, please keep it civil. I already deleted one. I want people to be educated to HYPP not get into knee jerk emotional reactions. Thanks!

  • I can't see very well what part of the body is. The sound is very loud too and doesn't explain the picture. Is this a horse (I guess)?. And, sorry by my ignorance. What is HYPP?

  • Sorry about the sound, I never have it on on my computer. The video is of her forearm. I took it on my phone at 8 pm, by the light of the tractor. Hypp is a genetic disorder that can cause muscle tremors. They can only be affected by it if they carry the gene that causes it. The gene has been linked to Impressive (aqha)bred horses. It can be controlled by diet, and many horses never have any problems from it, even if they carry it.

  • Agreed. Its so sad, this disease could be halted today if people would quit breeding known carriers, or go to the trouble of testing their horses when they do to all the trouble of breeding. It really is inexcusable.

  • The only horses that will have an HYPP attack are descendants of Impressive. N/N horse can not have an attack. I suggest you do your research on HYPP because you don't seem to understand anything about it. The generalization that halter horses are the ones that suffer from this because they are muscualar show that you haven't a clue. HYPP affects the sodium channels of afflicted horses and overloads the system with high potassium levels that cause muscle twitching, excessive yawning, and

  • @Hailleshorses if the horse has been DNA tested to be N/N for HyPP, then the gene is not present and will not appear - many descendants of Impressive are HyPP N/N and do not have HyPP and will not develop it at any time as they do not have the gene. As far as anyone can tell, it appeared by mutation one time only in Impressive (or one of his parents) and since then has only been passed on by inherited genes, and if the gene has not been inherited (as proven by a N/N DNA test) then HyPP is gone

  • hypp is a dominant gene that even in a N/N horse can apear any time if its related to impressive

  • not nessicaraly. I have this disease and my muscles twitch due to muslce weakness or any small spazum. I agree with you 100% but, im just saying. I have the disease and i twitch from it too.

  • This is completely false. HYPP attacks occur in N/H and H/H horses...meaning that every poor horse soul that has to go through this has only irresponsible breeding to thank. You are probably thinking of when a horse is tying up.

  • whats hypp

  • Not true. Only horses that are N/H or H/H for HYPP can have symptoms. Yes, the gene mutation can crop up anywhere, incluing in humans, but in horses, so far only the Impressive lines have the mutation.

You must be thinking of when a horse "tyes up" which is caused by overexertion. Tying up also causes muscles to twitch. This is VERY different from HYPP.

  • paralyzing the muscles around the lungs and/or heart witch can kill a horse due to heart attack or suffocation. Futhermore, the disease is not contained to horses shown in halter. True most Impressive horses are shown in halter many are shown under saddle. Do some research because you have no idea what this genetic disorder is or what it entails. I find it highly insulting that you allow yourself to comment oon subjects you know nothing about.

  • Your better off to have your horse tested for HYPP. N/N horses will never have an attack. N/H horses have a 50% chance of passing it on to their offspring and can be asymptomatic their whole lives and then have an attack.

This comes from a genetic line from the sire Impressive.

We can manage this disease with the correct feed. We can completely be rid of it by not breeding N/H or HYPP positive horses.
