Dr. Dennis Slamon, director of clinical/translational research at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, talks about his cancer research at a public forum April 15 sponsored by the California Instittue of Regnerative Medicine (CIRM), the state agency that funds stem cell research under Prop. 71. Slamon received a $20 million disease team grant from CIRM to study cancer stem cells, believed to be the root of many cancers and the reason they recur and metastasize. Slamon and his team are seeking to target these cancer stem cells with new therapies.
