I never really understood the appeal of this piece ... or why Paderewski was so poplar despite a so-called flawed technique.
Well I understand it now - and if Paderewski had flaws they were outwighed by his beautiful sound and musical insight

Paderewski aimait-il "La berceuse" de Chopin?!..... Je sens qu' il se débarrasse "au mieux" d' un pensum!!!!!
Quel dommage, avec un tel jeu...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this not a flawless performance with a pure gold tone? Right down the the held alto f starting around 3:20 (so fragile to present). What an absolutely incredible performance.

@JazzChriss Why measure poetry with time?

I doubt that Chopin would have played all the same notes in the variations more than once-he would have improvised the variations differently every time he played it. I wish some pianist would record this using a blend of Chopin's variations with the player's own variations- similar to a first-rate jazz pianist.

@pjioayncoe ..that could just be chopin ;)

Paderewski drew a golden tone from the piano.
who can play it faster? Hoffman did it in 3:12 or maybe it can be played under 3 minutes? I challenge anyone who can prove that it can be played with the speed of light and in the same time put baby to sleep? :D

The name of this piece is a bit misleading by itself... Chopin named it "Variants" first and only later came up with "Berceuse". Some performers tend to bring up more "lullaby" and others - "variants" i.e. variations.
This *lullaby* is not for putting anybody to sleep... like mazurkas are not for dancing, scherzos are not jokes, etudes are not exercises... ;)
