@anthonyhollis100 You are quite right that the original David Whitfield recording of Answer Me was, indeed, banned by the BBC although I can't remember whether this also applied to the Frankie Laine version David's version opened with the line Answer Me Lord above and included other references to O Lord The BBC would not tolerate this so the song was rerecorded with the opening line Answer Me O My Love Many records were banned by the BBC for even more ludicrous reasons

@scabycat Hi Yes you are quite correct and I totally agree,Frankie's original recording and not only his definitive version but the best recording by anyone of this great song

@anthonyhollis100 Hi Anthony Sorry to be pedantic and as a huge fan of Frankie Laine I only wish you were right and that Frankie had been at No.1 for an additional week in 1953 However I'm afraid that the figure is only 27 weeks It is true that he was joint No.1 with David Whitfield on 11th Dec but his 8th week at No.1 with Answer Me was for the chart dated 1st Jan.1954 so could not be included in the total for 1953 He was also top with Hey Joe on the 23/30 Oct.

@anthonyhollis100 I was a kid during WW11,but I had a brother who was nine years old who was in the war. I really loved the 50s, and I still sing "She wears red feathers."

@cf1934 We had just emerged from WW2 and all the restrictions that brought. We had lots of jazz 78s of all the big bands and the great Fats Waller and Hoagy. Then along came Guy, Frankie, Joe Stafford, Doris Day, Johnnie Ray and the rest, and gave us happy music, sometimes a bit naff with the words but hugely enjoyable and heart-lifting. If I am down, which is rare, despite a year being paralysed, I sing to myself. "She wears red feathers" etc. They owned to 50s for me.

@anthonyhollis100 In your last sentence you named my two all-time favorite singers!
