the Charles & Di of their time ...and we all know what happened there ......

@boredlikehell2008 It is really weird, but it's a common accent for an upper class gent of his age. In Atonement, the actor playing Kiera Knightley's brother or friend does a spot on ridiculous mimic of it. It's quite pronouncedly feminine and posh.

@PurePerfection Ah really?

@BritishRepublican And how can a President be arbitrary, if most of the times he was once Prime-Minister, so he was once leader of a Party? The run to Presidency becomes a bloody circus! Sadly no-one cares anymore. And you British should value more what you have, for you fortunately never had to live with an incompetent Republic. Oh right... Cromwell, perhaps? But that's way too many years ago.

@BritishRepublican And if I may "push" your memory, in all fascist countries in Europe, dictators rose with the majority of popular consent (either it be by a coup such as Salazar, or by winning elections, such as Hitler). But as Chaplin said "by the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power". And there's a huge difference between the heads-of-state of Portugal and Spain - sadly, Spanish politicians are more honest than the Portuguese. A monarchy is the best for Portugal right now.
-
@BritishRepublican You know that in Spain, Alfonso XIII was forced to abdicate, right? Spanish Republic was installed (the monarchy was abolished) and then the Nationalist Spain rose. Because your beautiful Republic was killing everyone (priests, conservatives, Catholics, and people who opposed the regime). That's what triggered the Civil War in Spain. In Portugal it happened the same thing after 1910. The Republic arrested and killed Jesuits, Catholics, monarchists and priests.

@PurePerfection The UK monarchy allows the officers of the state to torture, arrest, imprison and section people who have done no wrong. For example, swearing at the police for their incompetence can get you all those. Yet it is simple self-expression which does not prevent the police maintaining order.
The pursuit of basic powers for the people - such as the power not to be shot dead on the London Underground as was Jean Charles de Menezes is a worthwhile career.
-
@PurePerfection Monarchs very often hand over to tyrants to exterminate their republican rivals for them - as did the Spanish and Italian monarchies, to Franco and Mussolini. King Edward VIII wanted Mosley to do the same here in Britain.
-
@PurePerfection The most oppressive regimes in the world arise when a very bad head of state comes to power. Republicans are most concerned with getting the very best head of state who will defend the people and resisting the rise of a tyrant.
Republicans are the first people who tyrants like Hitler and Stalin lock up and exterminate. Therefore the defence against tyranny is to defend republicans.
