Love Thy Neighbor

immigrant human rights demonstration. Love Thy Neighbor event in Farmingville, Long Island, New York on Saturday, Feb 10, 2007. Organized by local peace activists and green party members. This demo was in response to getting sudden news that a national anti-immigrant group would be descending upon Farmingville. We thought our approach of standing on the opposite side of the street from the anti-immigrant group, not interacting with them, and stating our own message of love and inclusion, worked well. When one of their group tried to talk to us angrily, and then stand "too near us", we mostly ignored her, though one of us gave her brief, kind attention, listened to her, and she finally went back to her side. We felt like the day was a success, in that we stated our message, got positive honks from drivers, got smiles and thumbs up from day laborers, and stayed until just passed when the anti-immigrant group left.

Wow the Seven E. I used live right there. Those Mexicans really started to pick up from 92 to 97. All you have to do is look at that place now, it's a friggen dump. It used to be a nice little neighborhood. It's hard to love my neighbor when he's peeing on fence, kicking my dog, and dropping his empty beer cans all over my street. And thats keepin it really realz.
