Oliver was noticeably heavier during this period and seemed to get bigger by the early 1950's. Their comedy in these films was not as fluid as their films had been with Hal Roach but it is still a joy to watch.

Their 20th Century-Fox and MGM films were such a disgrace.

It cannot be legal for them to have this much fun and be paid for it, hehehe.

Well, ANY Laurel and Hardy is better than NO Laurel and Hardy, but these later, 1940s films for 20th Century Fox (and MGM) were not their best work. Unlike the Roach years (late 20s to 1940), Stan was not allowed any say in the routines or dialog and it shows. There are a few glimpses of their old selves, but in these later films, Stan and Ollie are just spouting radio gag lines and doing generic comedy. Go find their films "Sons Of The Desert" or "Way Out West" for the REAL thing.

They can NOT NOT make a funny movie,, they had the magic that you need, as a team, not so easy to work all the time, just look at Martin & Lewis!

@jet3529 : The words funny & comedy are synonymous, as are the words baby & puppy, skinny & thin, etc.

According to a recent book, very well written and researched, "Laurel & Hardy -- The Forties Forward" this was one of Fox's biggest grossers of that year! The fact that Laurel & Hardy were the stars doesn't necessarily make it an automatic "classic" (even they didn't like it) and yes, wartime audiences probably did deserve better, but it certainly wasn't awful. The studio made money, the boys made money and audiences were pacified. As Stan himself might have said, "Time wounds all heals".
