@tony1980philly Lester Bangs? Pfft you clearly made that name up. That sounds like a cartoon character. 1971? Are you kidding me? Guitars weren't even invented till 1975, everyone knows that. Also you misspelled Cream, it's C-R-E-A-M not C-R-E-E-M. You're welcome :D

@meandmyrobot Lester Bangs and others were using the word "punk-rock" in the pages of magazines like Creem to describe the Stooges and other bands since at least 1971. Bands that came up in London and New York a few years later (Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols etc.) were hugely inspired by the Stooges. They and their supporters also read Creem and NME and that's why they called the music punk-rock. The term was floating around in the music press and on peoples' lips for many years before 1976.

Everyone going on and on about those insurance ads. The performance in this footage and a fair portion of other stuff he's done gives him the right to do whatever the fuck he wants, whenever he wants. Viva Iggy!

@propolispills If you're gonna call The Stooges punk you might as well call them grunge or friggen techno or something. They were around long before punk ever existed. I don't really approve of retroactively relabeling bands with a modern genre. Even though bands like The Stooges (Or if you wanna go even earlier Link Wray or even Howlin Wolf) were totally brimming with sneering punk energy you can't really call them that.

Iggy and the Stooges were one of the first punk bands(probably the best of that era) along with Blue Cheer,MC5 and countless Garage bands of the early 70's and late 60's. Way before the sex pistols or ramones.
