  • I can't believe people think these fish are nuisances. Honestly, these are my favorite fish to catch.

  • @LiamFishing

I know that some US states have tried to eradicate them in the past., but we definitely don't consider them as nuisances, they are a sport fish in both provinces I fish in.

  • @Freshwaterphil i agree completely!I consider them gamefish to. I guess some people just don't.

  • @Freshwaterphil cool! Thanks for the info. The brown trout are spawning and I caught that pike in the spawning area

  • @21cglock

Assuming you're referring to Northern pike, they spawn under the ice at the end of winter. Once the ice melts and water starts to warm, they can be caught in shallow water, where they warm up in the sun. As the water warms up more, the big ones go deep as they need cool water to survive, but the smaller ones stay shallow and move into the thickest weeds.

The ones in the video were caught a couple weeks after the season opener, the water surface temp. was probably 45 - 50 degrees F.

  • @Freshwaterphil Cool! Thanks for the info. I always went for pan trout. I tried a Rapala for the first time last weekend in the Rio Grande and caught a 24 inch pike and an 18 inch brown trout. The fight of the pike got me interested in pike. What's the best parts of a river is best for pike?

  • @21cglock

The ones in the video are 30 inch + fish. The leader isn't always necessary, but I've had pike swallow 4-5 inch lures, so I don't like taking chances. I find that I do just as well with leaders, as long as they aren't too heavy to mess up the lure's action.

  • @Freshwaterphil Even with a rapala? I caught a 24 inch pike with out one two weeks ago. I just hear that the wire leaders mess up the action of the rapala. Thanks for the info buddy.

  • @21cglock

    Yes.

  • Do you use a steal leader for the pike?
