I don't see this as a gaffe. Conservatives jumped the gun on this because they wanted to stir up controversy. I think the republicans insulted Palin more by making this an issue. He was using an idiom. Any fool off the street would know it.

People see whaT they want to see, even when it is not there. Hannity is just making this stuff up.
Watch the clip of Cheney using the same joke in the last election. The crowdn laughs the same way. It's just a funny way to ridicule your opponent. And in this case the opponenet is clearly John McCain and his policies. To hear otherwise is to only hear what you want to hear, and not what actually was said.
