Nikolai Rochenko (Baryshnikov) is a Russian ballet dancer who 8 years earlier had defected to the West. He is in a plane flying over Russia when a malfunction forces the plane to land in Russia where the authorities hold him. Galina Ivanova (Helen Mirren) is in cahoots with the KGB to convince Rochenko to stay in the country and take up his former position as a celebrated Russian dancer.

In this scene she describes what his life could in Russia but Rochenko counters that he wants to be free and scream what he feels, like Vysotsky (the singer) does in his songs. She is overcome not only by recognizing the strength of Rochenkos argument but by the artistry and liberation of his dance.

Weeping with joy is the only appropriate emotional response to witnessing Baryshnikov dance.

I don't mean Baryshnikov, I'm referring to Helen Mirren, but hey, thanks anyway, it's good to have a "Fuck You" at least once a day.

That depends on what you're focusing. Classical ballet and contemporary ballet still have it, you should check out Herman Cornejo (of course you don't have to compare it to Míjail) and maybe you would find this passion and magnificence again. Other style? Yes! Magnificence and beauty: that still exist.

Oh, how I love this movie! And just some trivia about Vysotsky, he was a 1970's Russian dissident singer and the KGB outlawed his songs. The only way one could get a copy was when others taped his performances in bars and share the tapes. THe KGB allowed him to play was b/c he was so popular. Then he mysteriously died from a 'drug overdose'. This scene is very heartbreaking b/c the KGB would never have allowed the young man to dance this way and shows the heartaches dancers endured.
