In this video I am predominantly practicing return to perch flights with Kili. She has gotten really good at recalling to me but then she gets very reluctant to go back to a perch. Initially she went to perches easily because I used them to target fly her back and forth but once she realized she could hang out on me or go to her cage, she stopped going back to perch on command.

So one of the things I did to practice this is to recall her and not reward her for the recall but rather to reward her for the back to perch segment. I mixed it up so that she wouldn't know which one she would get rewarded for so she would have to follow all commands to get to earn the treats. This is called a variable frequency of reinforcement in psychology terminology.

Also I have her fly to me to play dead on the floor and I cue her to show her wings. You can see that she has most of her feathers now but still missing a few.

Come to the parrot recall and flighted tricks section of the parrot forum to talk about keeping parrots flighted:

  • nice vid man!

    1. what is that snapping thing and what is it for? Does she know she has done the trick when you klick it?

    2. what do you give her as candy?

  • I hold a clicker hidden in my hand and press it every time she has done the right behavior so she knows she did it right. If she does it wrong I don't click. Usually she gets treats when she hears a click but not always. The purpose of the clicker is to be able to tell her she still did it right even if there is no treat or if she is far away and I need time to get the treat to her. The treats I use range from seeds, nuts, apples. oatmeal, and pasta.

  • Ok, thank you! I have a budgie and i´s love to learn him some tricks, it would be awsome if you made a tutorial how to teach your birds do tricks!

To be honest I have no idea how you do it! I understand that you have to give them treats and tons of attention, but how do you do in the beginning? My budgie would never pick something in his mouth, and less throw it in a can! Please tell me how you guys do :))

    Sorry for my english

  • I do teach it. Go to my channel and look through the budgie videos. There's at least a few tricks we demonstrate how to teach.

  • ok, gotta watch them, but can Duke play dead? If so, you have to post a video of it :)

  • Nope, not yet. But he does hang upside down like a bat and he does fetch ;p
