Well no the vocal cords and the 'false' cords are two different folds of skin, and nearly every animal that makes noise with its throat (growling etc) uses false cords so it's perfectly natural. It's trying to make the same sounds by forcing air through your vocal cords which does the damage.

They use your vocal chords but in a different way. You can add as much voice as you like to your screams and Phil adds a lot of voice to his lows especially so it actually does fuck up your voice but #yolo right?
