Ever think Nintendo would use the Butthole Surfers in a commercial? Or suggest: "Give the World a Wedgie"?

If you don't, you must've missed Nintendo's "controversial" "Play It Loud" campaign from the mid-90's.

We originally wanted to use the phrase "Play It Loud" in the The Master Movie, but unfortunately, never got around to filming the scene. After rediscovering this commercial, we regret it even more.

    Even in '94 when this was released, it just seemed so "nerdy kid trying to act tough to hang with the cool crowd". Nintendo had yet to capture the "attitude" vibe it sorely lacked back then...

    They're appealing to many various age demographics then just targeting a single one. Teenagers like trendy dubstep today just like how teenagers in the 90's enjoyed grunge.

    How have they matured? The last Wii U commercial I saw was a piece of trash with some trendy dubstep in the background. Unless "maturing" means "got worse", there's no way they've matured.

    It was pretty much Nintendo Of America's attempt to counter Sega's more vicious and teenage oriented commercials.

    Nintendo has matured since then. Nintendo's US division now works more closely with its Japanese HQ and has become more sophisticated with their commercials.
