It's just one of the paradigms that allow scientists to study the relationship between neurons and behaviour. We use fruitflies because we can made transgenic animals to dissect the contributions and interactions of different brain areas and neurons.

Apart from this beer goggle effect, the questions they're trying to address here (I think) include: how animals recognise member of the same/opposite sex, what neuron circuit is involves, etc.
