Great video, and great effort, everything is possible for a human being. And for the people who want to build a road or a bridge in this part of the world, I`m colombian and we`ll never let the government build anything in one of the most biodiverse places in the earth, will be an ecological suicide!

why would he carry a bike through the gap and not just dump it and get a new one on the other side? I can't imagine all that mud and dirt was very good for it anyway

You are missing the point slightly. The crossing of the Darien Gap was just a part of a much longer journey - from South America to Alaska...all done on a bike. Get it now?

Ian was my uncle. It was killed in a hit and run accident. He was 74 and he was using the trip to get fit for his next adventure. He'd recently finished writing a book about his travels, which we are hoping to still get published. He truly was an extraordinary man and I will miss him sorely.

We have a lot of experience about this ideas in the brazil´s amazonas rain forest, and the results are terrible, look up some maps and you will see that the deforestation is worst in areas with roads, furthermore there is not comparison between a cocaine plantation area vs a highway area and the ecological connectivity lost (try to read some island biogeography theory)

On 25th September 2012 takes place the trial for the man who killed Ian Hibbel. Greek members of FEVR organisation and Greek cyclist will be there, but unfortunately the Greek law does not allow us to hire a defense attorney since we are not family members. Please if he was your uncle contact with us, otherwise Ian's lost voice won't be heard at the court. Urgently Email us here: soste.gr@gmail.com

Do you mean that he rode 100,000 miles on his favourite bike? I'm not sure what his final total mileage was but he did 100,000 miles on this one trip which lasted ten years with stops along the way to work. He'd done 250,000 miles by 1975 so by the time he died he may have doubled that?
