Django Unchained broke box office records on opening day, but we know one person who didn't make it out to theaters to check out Tarantino's latest flick.

In an interview with Vibe magazine, filmmaker Spike Lee refused to share his thoughts about Django, saying, "I can't speak on it 'cause I'm not gonna see it..." Although, he did go on to reveal, "All I'm going to say is that it's disrespectful to my ancestors."

Lee also took to his Twitter account to express his stance on the film's subject matter, and how it deals with race and historical issues, saying "American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western."

But Lee isn't Tarantino's only critic, David Germain of the Associated Press describes Django as, "Tarantino at his most puerile and least inventive, the premise offering little more than cold, nasty revenge and barrels of squishing, squirting blood."

Despite the controversy, the movie claims an 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, along with plenty of positive reviews. Rene Rodriguez of The Miami Herald says, "Django Unchained is the most brutal film Quentin Tarantino has ever made. But the movie is also exciting and ironic and, at times, explosively funny: Even at his most serious, Tarantino can't help but entertain and show you a good time."

Let's open up to the discussion to you, moviegoers. What do you think of Django, Spike Lee's opinions, and the controversy surrounding the film? Tell us what you think in the comments below, and be sure to subscribe to Clevver Movies!

I'm Erin Darling, thanks for watching!

Are you talking about when he had a problem w/ the n-word repetitively used in Jackie Brown? Him expressing Tyler Perry's shows having bufoonish imagery? Him pointing out Clint Eastwood not featuring black soldiers in Flags of Our Fathers (black soldiers fought in Iwo Jima too)? Or his current view on Django? Is that why he's labeled as controversial because he's not afraid to speak up?

And since you're such a Spike expert- name the movies of his YOU SAW that you felt weren't good and explain

Personally, I think that the movie Django was OK, but not a masterpiece. I'd have given 8 our of 10

Kerry Washington said somewhere that Tarantino is interested in giving work to black performers, and that he was only being accurate to history. Anyway, this controversy only helps promote the movie, so good for Tarantino.

I'm tired of all these self appointed "leaders" of black people. I enjoyed the movie and guess what I'm black.

Interesting that the commentator can quote a six sentence comment by Rodriguez, but can't bring herself to quote Spike Lee's two lines. She stopped right before "It was a HOLOCAUST". I guess that seat is only reserved for the Zionist audience.
