google the book The Nuclear Winter by Carl Sagan you can read some on of it online, it explains that in a worst case scenario if a nuclear war wil break out humanity is doomed, in short : 1 the nuclear fall out will cause thyroid nodules and lesions to the survivors and the children of the survivors second the nitrogen in the air will be chemicaly burned converting it into oxides of nitrogen, totaly destroying the ozonlayer leaving the earth open to deadly solar flares
