It's too tight to be gloss or ersatz. Blatant misfiring of saxes and horns going elsehwere without the tight form hear would definitely be mayhem, but this is more about form, editing, speed, harm, danger, the city, and well yes, chops. At some time in our lives, we all get to do the Batman at least once. Then we can do our Peter Gunn, and A Shot In The Dark. This music would have become gloss and quasi ersatz if it was slower and took a lot longer, making it pretentious. As it is, it's Joe.

Has nothing to do with tempo.
It has to do with, for example, the emasculation of Frith's amp sound, but if you're getting "danger" out of Horvitz then my guess is you get warmed up to Alpert and Saturday Night Live Band when you wanna "rage".
