I think actors get too much credit for what they do, its just playing that it. He gets to play at work, he thinks he has a skill. He doesn't, he acts. Well I am a little blinded because Deniro is a badass so his response was hilarious but the directer was not being rude he just was telling him how he wanted him to act that is why he is the director he directs the action.
