    this was so badly received- i was really surprised after seeing it, and being moved, how little people appreciated it.

    Funnily enough, that narrow-minded puritan is in fact Gena Rowlands.

    I saw this movie many years ago on the TV and had no idea what it was called. Now I can try to find it in a vid. shop. Thanks for posting.

    go to hell ! Why the hell one movie should entertain you? This are hollywood bullshits - the whole idea that movie should distinct from the art (from which womb it was born) and must transform in some kind of cheap tasteless entertainment chops for the masses.

    This movie is hard to watch. I respect Cassavetes a great deal, and think that some of his films (OPENING NIGHT, CHINESE BOOKIE) are outstanding. But HUSBANDS is painful in spots: the deliberate humiliation of the barflies, the subsequent endless vomiting scene ... I can even appreciate what the director is trying to do by turning away from convention and showing these men in their misery, but the movie is torture rather than entertainment.

    Even more amazing is that Gena Rowlands apparently prefers the edited version, showing that his wife didnt understand the film's brand of humor. It was ahead of its time, and its long overdue for a deluxe DVD release complete and uncut, plus the hours of scenes that Cassavetes didnt use, and the 1970 BBC documentary about the making of the film with its priceless outtakes.

    "Im not gonna hurt ya, but I swear to God I feel just like Jack the Ripper."{
