It's been their latest design obsession as of late. Thinner computers tend to be lighter, and Apple seems to want to make their products thinner and lighter all the time.
But really, I think there's going to be a point where something becomes too thin. I think the MacBook Air is getting there. People don't want thinness so much as they want lightness.
