Not always, that's the perceived notion that opera singers are large but you'll find skinny ones like Lucia Popp or Anna Netrebko. They come in all shapes and sizes.
Tarja is classically trained, not an opera singer (I know some pansies are going to start bitching or put down comments so I'll have to explain) To be considered a true opera singer, you have to perform in...an actual opera. She hasn't done that and I'm not sure it would be easy for her to play a role.

If they did that, they would have been accused of trying to make a "Carbon Copy." When they didn't, they were accused of changing their music (Which is absolute bullocks. It's just a new singer)
So either way, Nightwish were in a losing situation to begin with.
