Go to Business Convention and Expo of the Deaf, May 27-30,2010, Houston, TX, U.S.A. There experts and consultants will educate how to start up a small business as self-employment with strategies and tips. Also, there will be Business Opportunities Expo. We registered to go there! I know that it will be worth for our future and network with deaf biz owners than registration price. See ya there! :)

Yes, deaf job seekers are challenging and confronting with the equal employment issue and discrimination. The issue is anywhere even in U.S. or on islands.
I did not have a job for a long time but I got a smart way to start up a small business and doing it as self-employment. I'd suggest you to get another smart way instead of wasting your time for a job search if it is not productive for a long time...

Law in the US pretty week. They just eliminated the goldilocks standard where the employer would say you were disabled enough to be unqualified but not so disabled to be covered by the ADA. Most of the disabled who bring job discrimination cases lose them, and many can't find lawyers to even take their cases. I think unemployment among the deaf is something like 80%. Some of that is because once you qualify for SSI it's very hard to give it up, for what will probably be a very low paying job.

I'm not saying they all have jobs. I know the difficulties that are out there and that many do not have jobs. I'm not arguing that. What I'm arguing is that along with awareness and seeing that the Deaf CAN do just about anything, job hunting will not be as difficult. I do live with it. And I see it everyday. I see the stress. I've seen it with both of my parents. So before you call me son, know what it took to be a Deaf parent.
