(Continued) Also, check how he says he knew this. It's really an unbelievable, weak story even as he tells it. Colson, as with all those who were close to Nixon in the White House, denies Nixon knew anything about the breakin beforehand. Also, Magruder's accusation does nothing to disprove all the evidence on Nixon's tapes that he did not know about the breakin beforehand (and I've listened to literally hundreds of hours of his tapes) . Sorry for writing so much, but it's a complicated topic.
I know the difference between Colson and people who aren't Colson when Colson makes a statement that's captured on video tape. You apparently believe because you haven't seen something that means it doesn't exist.
How about a citation? A date? A name of the tape or the interview? This would go against everything that Colson has been saying for decades. This would have been big new if this had happened. Show some proof of this remarkable claim. I'm a historian who's read dozens of books on Nixon, done extensive primary research on him, and listened to extensive amounts of his tapes. If something this big that would change the historical narrative happened, I would love to find a copy of it.
Oh, I can't tell you that. No, I have to do this my way. You tell me what you know and I'll confirm. I'll keep you in the right direction if I can. But that's all. Just... follow the...watergate videos.
(Continued) Magruder even said an easily provable lie during the taping of the interview in which he made this accusation. When asked why he never said Nixon knew before, he said that he had never been asked about this before. To the contrary, he has been on record saying the opposite of what he says now many times. His story has changed *several* times over the years. First, he said that Mitchell ordered it, then he said Haldeman, then he said one of Haldeman's men, maybe Chapin, & now Nixon.
Sorry, you need to do some research. Every thing that you've said on this page has been historically inaccurate. Colson did not say this ever. You are clearly thinking of Jeb Magruder's accusation. Magruder, who barely knew Nixon, did claim this decades after the fact but his story is one of the most shakey I've ever heard of and does not stand up to any investigation, which is one of the reasons that some of the key figures who helped bring Nixon down during Watergate do not buy his story.
