This is a WONDERFUL song, and yet I absolutely hate the way it is produced on the track. On some recent re-release of Get Happy! they included an old demo version of this song that is much faster, and simpler, and more guitar based, and it is raw and absolutely blows this one way. This version is just too cheesy, melodramatic for me.

One of my favourite songs. When I first heard it decades ago I hated it enormously. But such a powerfully wonderful song. I can listen to it endlessly now. Thanks for the clip.

Well, selysse, 'nothing is funnier than unhappiness', a line culled from Samuel Beckett, the only artist who gives me more satisfaction than Philip Roth, still among us and still, like Beckett, refusing to lie to us about the fate of the human animal. That soft spot well might be your only bridge to understanding.

I always felt no one does "bitter" better than Elvis. :-)

Truly. How about the song: "I want You." What are other really good 'bitter ones'?
