You are referring to dark energy not dark matter. Dark matter is what seems to make up the majority of the known universe's mass and it also seems to be what is holding galaxies themselves together while dark energy keeps them moving away from eachother at an ever increasing rate.

Bitter you are talking about dark energy not dark matter. Dark matter is what makes up the majority of the mass of our universe and it seems to be what holds galaxies together (while dark energy pulls the galaxies themselves away from eachother)

If the universe, according to some depressing observations made a couple/few years ago is expanding at an exponential rate, then why do we need dark matter? Everything *isn't* holding together, it's flying apart at a scary speed. Everlasting separation and darkness at the end, even unto the last proton. Do we need the theory of dark matter anymore? Are there any physicists out there?

Thats where dark ENERGY comes in :)
