Being a shepherd in Transylvania is hard work - especially when ravenous bears keep attacking your travelling mules. Fascinating clip from BBC show 'Transylvania - Living With Predators'.

that's just the tradition in some parts or areas in romania the farmers r wearing this kind of hat...there r many kinds of hat's i mean traditional hats...only the farmers in small villages r wearing the traditional clothes and hats like this one...
U have a point, but it's slightly lobsided. There are plenty initiatives being provided now worldwide, whereby the local tourism community, compensate the local famers & herders for every animal lost to a *natural* predator (who *does* have a right to life too.) It's working very well, tourism is maintained, & local herders/farmers are taken care of too. *If* & I mean *if* all these predators were eliminated, it would lead to more unemployment in tourism. This way, everybody gains. Cheers!
unfornately, I have lived this nightmare. Sure, it is advertised that payment will be made IF (a) you get to the animal before it decomposes to much. In our area, cattle are sometimes on land 20 or more miles away, and they are not checked everyday. (2.) these funds tend to run out of money. This has also happened. I am not against the wildlife, just for the guy trying to make a living. Get rid of the problem bears and wolves, leave the rest alone.
Well Hal, Ur telling it from direct experience, which I respect. All I can say is it's a pity. It really is. Goddamnit, U *should* be fully compensated. And if the funds run out, it *should* be govt. backed to subsidise somebody like U. I guess, the real answer to all this is that society would care enough to ensure that this would happen. The question is, if there are enough people in society to care enough, & compensate the guy on the front line. I appreciate Ur addressals & civility. Cheers.
I agree. You can't knock this logic. I see the point in the locals making an income from it, and it *consequently* conserving green and beautiful wild areas. But I think it should still be looked at as regrettable, & not desirable. Especially the "Shootin fish in a barrel" way that the tourists kill them. It's only slightly removed from a video game. So why do they even bother?? Sad...
~Well, it's like a traditional hat that shepherds wear in Romania. It may look silly to you, but that's part of our culture like it or not. Don't be such a rude Leprechaun :P ~Now, can anybody tell me where can I find this documentary ? I would like to see it all.
Good Man!! I had to laugh at the leprechaun gag!! Actually, sorry I do realise now that it would have been offensive *personally*. But it's still a very impractical looking and silly hat! Almost as silly as a Leprechaun outfit!!! Cheers :P
