In this video I am fighting, my friend Philip Wilson, who recently got to the top 16 at the JKS World Championships in Okinawa (eliminated by Takuya Makita, the 2006 JKS All Japan Kumite Champion). Here again in this clip, I feint, then simultaneously slip the attempted punch, and go for an ashi-barai (which this time is unsuccessful in flooring my opponent). In the process, Phil snatches my dogi, and I respond with an immediate jodan punch. This technique is clearly a finisher in a real fight, and therefore an 'Ippon'. If I had not 'tensed' to 'put the breaks on', serious damage would have been done. Although not the best example, it certainly demonstrates 'what a real ippon' is. There is no second chance. If you wish to read some of my articles on Shotokan karate, and about the karate, of my late teacher, Asai Tetsuhiko, please check out my blog: http://andrebertel.blogspot.com

If its 'sun dome' then some would say tag match from their perspective. Their are those who realise that one can confuse kumite as combat. In combat a finishing blow is also determined by the recipients conditioning - See Karate-do KyohanFunakoshi. Tournaments aside, Does winning or losing really matter? In the end we all grow old and die. This is not a morbid statement but rather a small observation of an entire human process. I do enjoy this guys journey. I hope his life/training goes well.
nice punch..and trying ballet??..man i would throgh my sef from 10 metters into a water 10times and pay 100$..but trying ballet..that really hard..im training shotokan karate too..(yellow belt) ..how many Dans in black belt?
If he hadn't controlled that punch it would have been a knockout instead of a knockdown. People who say "lack of control" here are probably the ones who cry after getting hit, hoping for a hansoku. Can't you take a hit? Are you doing Karate or ballet? Grow some balls.
Its not a MMA fight, its a tag match. So its not really a matter of discussing whether it would have knocked him out. Its the fact that he was hit at all. So please, grow some brains.
I didn't suggest he join the K1. I suggested he try one, in response to a comment since deleted. To read experiences outside of karate would add to his popularity IMO. Responding to johnpricekataoka: To join ANY organization whereby one considers feedback from its sub-culture as a universal reality is BS. i.e. What is a real ippon? Karate, at least IMO is practiced without worrying about theory -- a state that I considered the owner of this channel to be already engaged in. -- All the best.
