Nice car and AWESOME sounding car. Now that I've said this, I'll state some facts which seem to be hard to for some people to accept:
1. Mazda used rotary engines for several years before the 1991 race, also in World Championship where they NEVER won a SINGLE race. 2. Rotary engines were not "banned". New rules for 1992 simply forced to use 3.5L "F1" engines. This rule change was known already in 1990 at least. 1991 race was already split to C1 and C2 category, C1 were the new cars.
Actually, it won because it outlasted the much faster Jaguars and the Mercedes. The Rotary was only outlawed from Group C because the FIA favored the F1 engine formula and tryed to sway most of the teams. Its currently eligible now, but is dramatically slower then the current engines of today, resulting in the partnership with AER.
Wow, I got a thumbs down for saying it sounded like a indycar from onboard while another person says it sounds like a F1 car without being thumbed down, sure are some contradictory folks here:/
There was even a six-rotor in development for street cars, but it kept breaking the driveline. Some engine builders in the UK make tri-turbo three-rotors, look them up.
