I'm playing this on the cello. Even though we have very very long string, some fingering are way easier to do because we always have at least one semi tone between two finger.
But the partita 3 is maybe the only one I can play entirely, In the other sonatas and partitas, there are akward chord, impossible to play unless you have gigantic hands, or a very small cello.

but still it sounds better on violin. because it can sing well. in fast phrases viola is not fast enough to respond and that is obvious in this recording. maybe play this piece on double bass? =D

I've thought of a double bass arrangement, but I think there's a reason I haven't ever found one.

Though...I have found an transcription of Paganini's 24 caprices for the double bass.

are you supposed play this song by holding certain notes longer then they're written? or is at the discretion of the player?

That's at the discretion of the performer. Usually, a soloist will hold some notes longer as they attempt to make the song they're own (even pro musicians; just listen to any solo recording). My teacher even told me that you can get points marked off your audition for being "too regimented".

When playing a baroque style piece the short notes become long notes and the long notes become short notes, that is why bach's suite 1 is slower than written.

Is your viola the one bought off or sold off ebay? It looks really familiar... Thought about buying the one with edges for easier higher playing position, but it seemed too cheap.
