From what I understand, if you're referring to a specific type of pumpkin, "Jap" isn't a derogatory term. Nor is it a derogatory term if you're discussing the motorcycle and aircraft engines made by the English firm J. A. Prestwich & Sons between 1903 and 1950. But if you're talking about the people from a certain archipelago off the coast of eastern Asia, then "Jap" is a derogatory term.
