her career took off during her first marriage i believe... so she never changed her professional name

I wondered the same thing myself so I IMDb'ed both Faith and Tim, you find that Tim's legal last name isn't even McGraw and Faith's isn't Hill. It appears that Tim took McGraw solely as a stage name when he came to know his biological dad and Faith's legal last name is Perry, her maiden name.

Tim's last name was Smith (his step fathers name) but it was legally changed to McGraw later. It's not just a stage name.
