you're confused cause what you don't realize is what causes his blindness in the first place, i don't think it was natural, but rather what he seen in his childhood was so traumatic that he made himself blind; and at the end he was able to open his eyes fully cause he found out what happened to his mother that he was hiding from himself; and i agree it's a great anime.

ah it makes sense when you put it that way...although i thought at the end that the sister was the one to make him see again...then she decided to become god and bring people back to life ha ha ha....ahh...oh well it's just an anime after all... O__O
