In the manga, it was more obvious that she wanted to be in space. I think she really did sign up in the anime but regretted it. I love any part where it shows the rain...It's so pretty.
In part 1, Noboru said that she was selected by the UNSF, which implies to me that she was drafted.
Besides, if she loved Noboru as much as the whole story implies, it doesn't seem to me as if she'd want to leave him especially for a situation where she might die and really never see him again.
Right before she and the fleet first encounter the Tarsians near Pluto, she's writing in her mail that she doesn't think the fleet will find the Tarsians. She definitely would rather be back at home with Noboru.
I also don't think she has much of a warrior's spirit, even for all the damage she causes in the end.
